The issue of vaccination policies and discrimination is a big issue for all Australians but in particular it is a big issue for women. Recent developments in the USA are demonstrating this fact. Australia has recently implemented policies for healthcare workers that require them to have vaccines if they are training for work in clinical situations. These policies have been in place in America for several years and have been extended to other professions. Healthcare workers are now losing their jobs if they choose not to update with some vaccines – including the flu vaccine. These government policies are enforcing mandatory vaccination (for vaccines that have risks) and they infringe upon the bodily integrity of individuals. In addition, parents in Australia will now lose $2,100 in welfare benefits from the government if they do not get a doctor to sign their conscientious objector’s form to refuse any of the 11 vaccines that an infant needs before 1 year of age. Evidence for the necessity of these vaccines has not been provided.
This policy was put in place by the Minister for Health, Nicola Roxon in 2011, even though many concerned public members wrote to her with the science and ethics opposing this policy. In America the majority of nursing aids, occupational therapists, childcare workers, teaching staff and flight attendants are women. In an age where industry is influencing medical science and research, it is important that experts do not obtain control over people’s bodies. This is documented in submission 569 to the Senate Inquiry and I would like the Federal Human Rights Commission to address this issue publicly because our right to bodily integrity is compromised with this Bill.
