Today the media informed Australians that ‘doctors will be taking aim at vaccine objectors’. This news item was presented to the public in the usual biased manner that results in misinforming the public rather than allowing open and transparent debate.
Instead of having a representative of both sides of the argument the ABC invited Suzanne Cory (president of the Australian Academy of Science) to represent the government and to also speak for the ‘vaccine objectors’ – because no one was invited to represent this group. When the interviewer asked Ms. Cory why an increasing number of people are not vaccinating she incorrectly suggested it was ‘complacency’. This statement is untrue. The government is well aware that it is well-informed educated people who are questioning the number of vaccines the government is recommending.
The ABC program was an attempt to frighten parents into vaccinating and did not present evidence to support the claims it made. It was stated in the program that ‘Immunisation remains the most effective protection against disease’. Saying these words does not make it true. The majority of vaccines were introduced after 1950 when infectious diseases in all developed countries were a low risk to children and adults.
The ABC is also reporting that ‘extensive studies have been done comparing the autism rate of vaccinated and unvaccinated people’. Again just by saying this doesn’t make it true. There are no published long-term studies of the health effects of animals or controlled clinical trials of infants that have been given the current schedule of 12 vaccines before they are 1 year of age. The government did not ensure this research was completed before it recommended this schedule to parents. Several independent researchers have now attempted these studies and the results indicate autism and other chronic illness can be caused by the use of multiple vaccines in infants.
